I have no idea how long ELPH will be a small stand heavy use. And there's always the chance that will be lost, hit really hard, wet or damaged.
I already have the Canon PowerShot A580. 8MP and all its features, I think it's a small miracle of engineering. And yes, I prefer to use the PowerShot SD780 IS USM which I review here. The A580 is part of the best hand, has a 4x zoom lens with an F2.6 - 5.5 hours, and the viewfinder is easier to use. The lens is higher than the SLR SLR in just a 3x zoom F3.2 - 5.8 aperture.
But if image sharpness, color quality and portability, you can simply not be a better choice of point and shoot camera of this reflex. Once maybe, but not yet. Not even want to go to the bathroom without it. It has nothing to wear. And the pictures are really more than a point and shoot camera.
